What is Bubble Tea? A Beginner’s Guide to This Fun & Tasty Drink by Boba Formosa
Bubble tea, also known as boba tea, is a trendy and delicious drink that originated in Taiwan. It has gained immense popularity worldwide due to its unique texture and customizable flavours.
Beverage Base: The Foundation of Bubble Tea
Every bubble tea starts with a flavorful beverage base. There are different options available to suit various taste preferences:
-
Brewing Tea (Tea Leaves): Traditional bubble tea often uses freshly brewed tea, such as black tea, green tea, or oolong tea, to create a rich and aromatic base.
-
Flavoured Powder: Some bubble teas use flavoured powders, like taro, matcha, or chocolate, to enhance the taste and create a creamy texture.
-
Flavoured Syrup: Another option is to mix tea with fruit syrups, such as mango, strawberry, or passionfruit, to achieve a refreshing and fruity taste.
-
Other Beverages (Jam): Creative bubble tea shops experiment with bases like milk, coffee, smoothies, or even fruit jams, which add a richer texture and fruitier taste with natural pulp.
Topping: The Fun & Chewy Add-ons
One of the most exciting parts of bubble tea is the variety of toppings available. These add-ons provide different textures and flavours, making each sip an adventure:
-
Tapioca Pearls: The classic bubble tea topping! These chewy pearls are made from cassava starch and give the drink its signature bouncy texture.
-
Flavoured Popping Balls: Small, juice-filled spheres that burst in your mouth, available in flavours like lychee, strawberry, and mango.
-
Flavoured Han Tien Jelly Ball: A soft and bouncy jelly ball. It is often infused with flavours like brown sugar, mango, or taro.
-
Coconut Jelly: A firmer, slightly crunchy jelly made from coconut, offering a mild sweetness and unique texture.
-
Jelly/Other Toppings: Common types include aloe vera, grass jelly, aiyu jelly, and pudding, adding a refreshing and slightly chewy texture.
-
Crema Top: A rich, frothy layer of whipped cream or salted cheese foam that enhances the flavour and gives the drink a smooth finish.
Bubble tea is a highly customizable drink that allows you to mix and match flavours and toppings to suit your preferences. Whether you enjoy a classic milk tea with tapioca pearls or a fruity tea with popping balls, there’s a bubble tea combination for everyone.
